Summary

Hundreds of thousands of clinicians and graduate students have relied on this text--now significantly revised with more than 50% new material--to learn the fundamentals of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)。 Leading expert Judith S。 Beck demonstrates how to engage patients, develop a sound case conceptualization, plan individualized treatment, structure sessions, and implement core cognitive, behavioral, and experiential techniques。 Throughout the book, extended cases of one client with severe depression and another with depression, anxiety, and borderline personality traits illustrate how a skilled therapist delivers CBT and troubleshoots common difficulties。 Adding to the third edition's utility, the companion website features downloadable worksheets and videos of therapy sessions。

New to This Edition
*Chapter on the therapeutic relationship。
*Chapter on integrating mindfulness into treatment。
*Presents recovery-oriented cognitive therapy (CT-R)--which emphasizes clients’ aspirations, values, and positive adaptation--alongside traditional CBT。
*Pedagogical features: clinical tips, reflection questions, practice exercises, and videos at the companion website。
*New case examples featuring clients with more complex problems。
*Demonstrates how to integrate strategies from other modalities, such as acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy。

A great comprehensive guide for anyone looking to understand CBT methodology, therapeutic interventions, and treatment planning。 Because this is first wave CBT, the approach is very dry and clinical, as opposed to newer waves。

CBT had always been appealing to me whenever I go through my textbooks。 Although after seeing CBT session videos and reflecting back on my counseling psychology class, I felt taken aback at how heavily structured it seemed。 I personally did not want to go to therapy to do。。。 homework。 Yet, after reading this I learned that CBT doesn’t necessarily need to be rigid if the client isn’t doing well with agenda setting every session。 I have gained a whole new appreciation for CBT。 I think it’s practic CBT had always been appealing to me whenever I go through my textbooks。 Although after seeing CBT session videos and reflecting back on my counseling psychology class, I felt taken aback at how heavily structured it seemed。 I personally did not want to go to therapy to do。。。 homework。 Yet, after reading this I learned that CBT doesn’t necessarily need to be rigid if the client isn’t doing well with agenda setting every session。 I have gained a whole new appreciation for CBT。 I think it’s practical, and I can see that it can fit tele-counseling in the time of the pandemic (conducted by therapists with a doctoral degree of course, I think this type of therapeutic approach relies on the therapist’s repertoire of evidence-based knowledge and clients should always ask for the therapist’s credentials prior to committing to the sessions)。 。。。more

I'm only halfway through it and I must say, to me this book is well-written and easy to read, even though it's my very first time reading about CBT。 So far I would say I highly recommend it to other beginners like me。 I'm only halfway through it and I must say, to me this book is well-written and easy to read, even though it's my very first time reading about CBT。 So far I would say I highly recommend it to other beginners like me。 。。。more

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the cognitive model, a model that states that an individual's well-being depends on the perception of events。 A situation in itself is not what makes people feel bad, it's the way the situation is perceived。 The model states that a situation will trigger automatic thoughts which in turn leads to an emotional, behavioral and/or physiological response which can be positive or negative, constructive or unconstructive。 Automatic thoughts are often uncon Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the cognitive model, a model that states that an individual's well-being depends on the perception of events。 A situation in itself is not what makes people feel bad, it's the way the situation is perceived。 The model states that a situation will trigger automatic thoughts which in turn leads to an emotional, behavioral and/or physiological response which can be positive or negative, constructive or unconstructive。 Automatic thoughts are often unconscious and stem from the way the individual construes herself, what is called a core belief。 Core beliefs are the most central ideas the individual have of herself, which the individual almost sees as absolute truths about her person。 Core beliefs are almost all-encompassing, they stretch over much of an individual's self-image and formulations can be everything from "I'm incompetent" to "I can't be loved"。 The goal of CBT is to find and work with core beliefs that lead to negative emotion and behavior in clients。 This is done by identifying automatic thoughts, thoughts that pop up in distressing situations and to pay attention to them。 When paid attention to, the emotional and behavioral response can be changed。 This is done with several methods, but it's basically about rationally rationally processing the automatic thoughts to disprove them and to set up behavioral plans to make a change from the top-down。 This is done in incremental steps and it's important that the therapist builds a therapeutic alliance with the client, making it a co-operative endeavor。 The therapist carries the heavier load in the beginning, but the focus should slowly shift to the client after getting educated by the therapist。I got a lot out of this book, as it was the first of its kind I've read。。 I liked the way the book was layed out, and that it was as basic as it was。 I also like the fact that CBT is predicated on the idea that the individual should be attentive to, and reflect on, her own thoughts and question them。 I think that this is not only a good way of "doing" therapy, it's also a good way to conduct yourself in life。 Although I like the model CBT is based on, I think it can be a little simple。 I agree that the way you perceive a situation steers your emotional and behavioral response, but certain things are just life problems, traumatic, depressing life problems, not psychological or perceptual problems。 I do think it's a helpful mode of therapy though, and even if I can't practice it on anyone else I'll try some of the tools on myself。 。。。more

This was required reading for the CBT course I am doing next month。 This is written by Judith Beck, daughter of Aaron and I perceived a lot of protecting her Father’s legacy。 She presents a form of CBT that demands “compliance” from both Therapist and Patient。 “Therapists failure to socialise the patient adequately…” “Patients unwillingness to conform to prescribed structure” (p 60)。 It sets a tone that it CBT is in effective the problem is with the Therapist or the Patient, not with the CBT。 Be This was required reading for the CBT course I am doing next month。 This is written by Judith Beck, daughter of Aaron and I perceived a lot of protecting her Father’s legacy。 She presents a form of CBT that demands “compliance” from both Therapist and Patient。 “Therapists failure to socialise the patient adequately…” “Patients unwillingness to conform to prescribed structure” (p 60)。 It sets a tone that it CBT is in effective the problem is with the Therapist or the Patient, not with the CBT。 Beck presents her version of CBT in mechanistic tones which underlies its behaviourists roots。 Beck is a true believer in CBT。 Reading this I was also reminded of an anecdote about Karate。 When UFC first cam around and the fights were being won by ground fighting, Karate practitioners announced it had "rediscovered" lost Karate ground work Katas。 I see a little of this in Beck's prescription of CBT cannon which seems a lot wider than what I understood of what CBT is。 None the less if is a useful tool to learn as part of an aspiring psychotherapist's (me) tool kit。 What I like most was that Beck was repeatedly stated the goal of teaching the CBT techniques was so the patient could learn to apply for themselves and become their own therapist。 The overt goal of Beck was to make herself redundant as a therapist。 She is also a big believer in Bibliotherapy (me too)。Beck uses "Sally" as a case to explain CBT。 Sally is a student that has developed depression precipitated by her own high expectations。 Most of the book follows Sally's therapy。 Beck introduces other patients such as "Marie" suffering from death anxiety who is concerned her children would be devastated forever if she died and is able to visual her own death in a fiery car crash which paralyses her。Required reading done and I am looking forward to the course and will complete another book about CBT before I arrive。 Beck's work might be a reference in the future when I apply to concepts within the book。 。。。more
